Road to Paris 2024: India – Part 2

Here is a look at the next 8 Sports and upcoming qualification events in them.

Cycling: There are 5 different of cycling events at Paris Olympics. BMX freestyle, BMX Racing, Mountain Biking, Road & Track Cycling. India has a chance to get its first ever quota in Track Cycling. Currently the Olympic ranking qualification period is on. Read Track Cycling qualification system here

From an event perspective, 2023 World Cycling Championship is scheduled in August 2023 (3-13 Aug). India will also be hosting 2023 Asian Mountain Biking Championship in October in Panchkula.

Equestrian: The Olympic ranking period will close on 31st December,2023. Currently, no Indian is in contention for qualification as per ranking.

Fencing: The Olympic ranking period is between 3rd April, 2023 to 1st April, 2024. Asian Zonal qualifier will take place between 15-30 April, 2024. Read Fencing qualification system here.

Field Hockey: India can get an Olympic quota via 2 ways: Get Gold at Asian Games 2023 or via Olympic qualification tournaments scheduled Jan-Feb 2023. Hopefully both Men’s and Women’s team should be able to qualify.

Football: In Men’s football, the qualification will be via 2024 U-23 Asia Cup. Top 3 teams will qualify for Olympics. The qualification tournament for U-23 Asian Cup will be held in September. India is drawn wih UAE, Maldives & China. Top team from the group qualfies for Asia Cup & best 4 runner-ups also qualify.

In Women’s football, there are only 2 spots for Asian teams. India have made it to the 2nd round of qualification. Out of the 12 teams in Round 2, only 4 will make it to Round 3. From those 4 teams, 2 will qualify. 2nd Round is scheduled in last week of October. Read Football qualification system here.

Golf: Golf qualification is based on World Ranking. Ranking period will go on till June 2024. As per current ranking, India is in a position to secure 2 quotas in Men (Anirban Lahiri & Subhankar Sharma) and 2 in Women (Aditi Ashok & Diksha Dagar). Gymnastics: In Artistic Gymanstics, following qualification events are scheduled: 2023 World Championships (1-8 October), 2024 World Cup Series (Jan-Mar 2024) and 2024 Asian Championships.

In Rhythmic Gymanstics, 2 qualification events are left: 2023 World Championships (23-27 August), 2024 Asian Championships (Apr-May 2024).

In Trampoline, 3 qualification events will take place: 2023 World Championships (9-19 Nov 23), 2024 World Cup Series (Feb-Apr 24) and 2024 Asian Championships (Apr-May 24).

One gymnast to look forward to is Pranati Nayak in vault.

Handball: For Men’s handball, Asian qualification tournament will be held in October in Doha. Winner of the tournament will qualify. Apart from this, IHF Olympic qualifier will take place in March 2024.

In Women’s handball, Asian qualification tournament will take place between 17-23 August in Japan. Six teams (including India) will fight for Olympic qualification. Top team will directly qualify. Second place team qualifies for IHF Olympic qualifiers scheduled in April 2024.
