Earlier this morning India secured quotas for Men’s and Women’s 4x400m Relay event for Paris Olympics. The one event which they failed to qualify was Mixed 4x400m Relay. Can they still qualify for it? Let us find out…

Qualification System for 4x400m Mixed Relay Event

A total of 16 teams will qualify for Paris Olympics in the Mixed 4x400m Relay event. Out of these 16 quota places, 14 places were secured by teams at World Relays. The rest 2 quotas will be given by World Rankings as on 30th June, 2024.

What happened at World Relays?

India finished 6th in Heat 2 of Round 1 for the Mixed Relay event with a time of 3:20.36. India had another chance to qualify in Round 2. However, India did not start the Round 2 because it prioritized quotas in individual Men’s and Women’s 4x400m relay events. There was hardly a 75 minute break between races and hence we did not participate.

Following countries secured quotas at World Relays in Mixed 4x400m Relay: Bahamas, Belgium, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Jamaica, Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine & United States.

Who gets the remaining 2 quotas?

The remaining 2 quotas will be decided basis ranking. As of today, Czech Republic and Italy are in 15th and 16th position.

India is currently 23rd on the list with a best time of 3:14.34 which was achieved at Asian Games last year. Now to qualify for Paris, India will have to improve their ranking and rise up to at least 16th position.

There is still time left to do this. The ranking cut-off is 30th June. And Indian relay team has a great chance to improve its timing at Asian Relay Championships which will be held in Thailand on 20-21 May. The timing recorded by Indian Mixed relay team at last year’s Asian Games is current national record. So, we have to do our best time to improve on ranking.

It is possible. Indian 400m relay runners are on the rise. Let’s hope they get couple of opportunities before deadline to improve their timing.
