Rugby Sevens at the LA 2028 Olympics

Where will Rugby Sevens take place?

Rugby Sevens will be held at the Dignity Health Sports Park (DHSP) located in Carson, California.

Dates for Competition:

12-18th July 2028

Medal events will take place on the 15th and 18th of July.

Events in Rugby Sevens at the LA Olympics: 2 events are scheduled to take place – Men’s Tournament & Women’s Tournament.

Number of Quota Places:

12 teams will qualify in each of the Men’s and Women’s tournaments. Each team will be represented by 12 athletes, and hence, a total of 288 athletes will be part of Rugby Sevens at the LA 2028 Olympics.

How to Qualify:

For both Men’s and Women’s tournaments, quotas will be allocated through 4 qualification routes:

Qualification is through the following 4 formats:

Host Country Quotas: The USA, as the host nation, will receive 1 quota each in both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments. This is subject ot their regular participation in international tournaments.

2027 World Rugby SVNS World Championship: The top 4 teams (excluding USA) at the 2027 World Rugby Championships will qualify for the 2028 Olympics.

Continental Quotas: The winner of the 2027 World Rugby Regional Association Championship Tour will qualify for the Olympics.

  1. Africa – 1 team
  2. Asia – 1 team
  3. Europe – 1 team
  4. North America – 1 team
  5. Oceania – 1 team
  6. South America – 1 team

All 2027 World Rugby Regional Association Championship Qualification Tournaments will take place between 7 June and 31 December 2027.

Final Olympic Repechage Tournament: The winner of the repechage tournament will receive the final quota. 8 teams will compete in the final repechage tournament.

The quota and rankings for the repechage tournament will be based on regional performances at the relevant 2027 season World Rugby Sevens tournaments.

  • Africa – 1 team
  • Asia – 1 team
  • Europe – 1 team
  • North America – 1 team
  • Oceania – 1 team
  • South America – 1 team
  • 2 regions TBC – 1 additional spot each

India’s Chance of Qualification:

India has never achieved Olympic qualification in Rugby Sevens. The current World Ranking of India’s Rugby Sevens Men’s team is 85 while that of Women’s is 56. Hence, practically no chance of qualification.
