Sailing at the LA 2028 Olympics

Where will Sailing take place?

Sailing events for the LA28 Olympic Games will take place at two Southern California locations: Belmont Shore in Long Beach for board events (windsurfing/kite) and the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro for boat events (dinghy, skiff, multihull).

Dates for Competition:

16-28th July 2028

Events in Sailing at the LA Olympics: There will be 10 medal events – 4 in Men, 4 in Women and 2 Mixed events.

Number of Quota Places:

A total of 330 athletes will compete in Sailing at the LA 2028 Olympics. A nation can qualify a maximum of 1 boat in each category.

How to Qualify:

Qualification for the 10 events will be based on the following pathway:

  1. 2027 World Sailing Championships, Fortaleza, Brazil, 20 – 22 January: Winner of each of the one-person sailing events qualifies for the Olympics.
  2. 2027 World Sailing Championships, Gdynia, Poland, July 2027: Winner of each of the two-person sailing events qualifies for the Olympics.
  3. 2027 Continental Qualification Events: Quotas will be allocated at the respective continental qualifier based on the following allocation table:

4. 2028 Last Chance Regatta: The highest placed nations not already qualified at the 2027 World Sailing Championships or the 2027 Continental Qualification events in each of the 10 sailing events at the 2028 Last Chance Regatta will qualify as per the
quotas.

5. Emerging Nations – 2028 Last Chance Regatta: Nations that are part of the emerging nations programme but not yet qualified will take part in this qualifier. 4 quota places in 4 events will be allocated.

6. Host Country and Universality Places: USA, as the host nation, qualifies 1 boat in each event. 4 quotas will be allocated through Universality places.

Indian Athletes’ Chance of Qualification:

India has qualified sailors in each of the last 2 Olympics: 4 Sailors at the 2020 Olympics and 2 sailors at the 2024 Olympics.

Ones to watch out for: Vishnu Sarvanan is currently World No. 22 in Men’s Single Dinghy. Nethra Kumanan is World No. 29 in Women’s Single Dinghy. Siddheshwar and Ramya are ranked World No. 50 in the Mixed multihull event.
