Events in Golf at the LA Olympics:

At the LA 2028 Olympics, we will have 3 events in Golf: Men’s individual stroke play, Women’s individual stroke play and Mixed Team Event.

Mixed Team event is a new addition.

Number of Quota Places:

A total of 120 quotas will be allocated (60 Male and 60 Female).

A nation can have a maximum of 8 quotas (4 Male and 4 Female).

How to Qualify:

Qualification will be based on the World Golf Rankings.

The ranking period will be between 22 June 2026 and 19 June 2028 for Men. For Women, the ranking period will be between 8 June 2026 and 5 June 2028.

Qualification Rules:

  1. Host Country Quota: 1 quota per gender is reserved for the host nation.
  2. If athletes are ranked in the top-15 World Ranking as on the cut-off date, a maximum of 4 athletes can qualify from a country.
  3. For rest of the quota places, a maximum of 2 athletes can qualify from a country. The allocation will be done basis ranking while also ensuring all 5 continents are represented.
  4. Mixed Team Qualification: There will be no separate quotas for mixed events. All athletes who have qualified would enter the draw, subject to a minimum of 1 athlete in both the Men’s and Women’s draws.
  5. All countries in the draw will then be ranked basis the highest-ranked athlete in either the Men/Women’s ranking. 15 top-ranked teams will qualify for the Mixed event, subject to only 1 team per country. The 16th quota in the mixed team event is reserved for the hosts USA.

Given the prowess of American Golfers, they would be favourites for all 3 medals at their home Olympics.

Indian Players to watch out for during qualification:

Men’s Individual: Currently, no Indian Golfer is ranked in top-400 World ranking. Let us see over the next 2 years if someone can make a charge up the rankings.

Women’s Individual: There are 4 Indian female golfers inside top-400: Aditi Ashok (172), Pranavi Urs (246), Diksha Dagar (253) and Avani Prashanth (374). Hopefully, 2 of them should make the cut.

Indian in Golf at the Olympics:

India’s best finish in Golf came at the Tokyo Olympics when Aditi Ashok finished 4th in Women’s Golf. She missed the medal by a shot.
