Number of Quota Places:
A total of 340 athletes will compete in shooting at the LA 2028 Olympics. A nation can qualify a maximum of 24 athletes (12 men & 12 women).
How to Qualify:
Qualification quotas will be allocated through designated qualification tournaments, which will be held between 31st July 2026 and 1st May 2028.
Qualification is through following 5 formats:
Host Country Quotas: USA as the host nation will get 1 quota each in all the 12 individual events.
World Championship/World Cup: Quotas will be allocated at the 2026 and 2027 World Championships along with ISSF World Cups held in 2027. More details below.
Continental Quotas: Each of the 5 continental federations will organize Olympic qualifying event and give respective continental quotas through those events.
Ranking Quotas: 12 quotas (1 in each of the individual events) will be given basis Olympic ranking as on 1st May, 2028. Highest ranked athlete who has still not qualified will get this quota. Ranking quota is subject to a nation not having qualified an athlete in that event.
Universality Quotas: To ensure broader representation, 1 quota in each individual event will be given through universality places.
Here is the split of quotas available across the 5 formats:

Following the split of quotas available through the World Championships and World Cups.

Other qualification guidelines:
- One athlete can obtain only one quota place for his/her NOC.
- An NOC can obtain only one quota place in any of the individual events at one ISSF World Championship. At any other designated ISSF Olympic Qualifying Competitions, an NOC can obtain up to two quota places in any of the individual events.
- A quota place can be obtained only if the result achieved in that specific ISSF Olympic Qualifying Competition by the athlete is equal to or higher than the MQS for that event.
- Only a maximum of three athletes from one country can compete in the final.
- The quota places are allocated to NOCs, except when quota places are achieved through the Olympic Ranking and universality places.
- Quotas for Mixed Events will be basis quotas obtained in individual events. Eligible athletes who qualified for individual events can pair up for Mixed events.
Indian Athletes’ Chance of Qualification:
India achieved 21 out of a maximum of 24 quotas at the Paris Olympics. Given the depth of Indian shooting right now, we should expect maximum quotas in rifle and pistol events and a minimum of 1 quota place in each of the 4 shotgun events.
Indian Olympic Medalists in Shooting:
India has won a total of 7 Olympic medals in Shooting – 1 Gold, 2 Silver, and 4 Bronze. At the Paris Olympics, Manu Bhaker became the 1st Indian athlete to win 2 medals at a single Olympics. Abhinav Bindra is the lone Olympic Champion from India in Shooting (Gold at Beijing Olympics).
