Road to Paris 2024: Equestrian

A lot of Indian sports fans watched Equestrian at Tokyo Olympics due to Fouaad Mirza. He finished a credible 23rd in Eventing. Let us have a look at how qualification process will work in Equestrian for Paris 2024 Olympics.

Equestrian at Paris 2024 Olympics

Equestrian at Paris Olympics will take place across 3 disciplines: Dressage, Eventing and Jumping. In each of the disciplines, there will be an individual event as well as a team event. These events will happen across both genders – Male and Female. So overall 12 events will take place.

Let us have a look at qualification system across 3 events:

Dressage: In Dressage, 15 teams will qualify in each of Men’s and Women’s team event. 1 place is reserved for home country. Rest 14 quota places will allocated as follows:

6 quotas – Top 6 teams at 2022 FEI Dressage World Championship
8 quotas to be distributed at respective Olympic Continental Group Qualification events. Central Asia, Central & Eastern Europe is clubbed under Olympic Group C and their qualification event will take place in 2023. 1 quota is available for Group C.

All 15 teams with get 3 individual quotas as well for individual event. Rest of the 15 individual quotas will be given as per FEI World Ranking. 14 quotas will be given as per highest ranked athletes per Olympic Group. 2 quotas per Olympic Group will be given based on ranking subject to 1 quota per nation.

1 quota will be given based on highest overall ranked athlete yet to qualify for the Games.

FEI Olympic ranking will be based on ranking points allocated between 1st January to 31st December 2023.


Eventing: In Eventing, 16 teams will qualify in each of Men’s and Women’s team event. 1 place is reserved for home country. Rest 15 quota places will allocated as follows:

7 quotas – Top 7 teams at 2022 FEI Eventing World Championship
7 quotas to be distributed at respective Olympic Continental Group Qualification events. Central Asia, Central & Eastern Europe is clubbed under Olympic Group C and their qualification event will take place in 2023. 1 quota is available for Group C.
1 quota to be given to highest ranked team at 2023 FEI Eventing Nation Cup Series

All 16 teams with get 3 individual quotas as well for individual event. Rest of the 17 individual quotas will be given as per FEI World Ranking. 14 quotas will be given as per highest ranked athletes per Olympic Group. 2 quotas per Olympic Group will be given based on ranking subject to 1 quota per nation.

3 quotas will be given based on overall FEI Olympic rankings subject to 2 quotas per nation.

FEI Olympic ranking will be based on ranking points allocated between 1st January to 31st December 2023. Best 4 scores per athlete/horse combination will be considered.


Jumping: In Jumping, 20 teams will qualify in each of Men’s and Women’s team event. 1 place is reserved for home country. Rest 19 quota places will allocated as follows:

5 quotas – Top 5 teams at 2022 FEI Jumping World Championship
1 quota – Highest ranked team at 2022 FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final
12 quotas to be distributed at respective Olympic Continental Group Qualification events. Central Asia, Central & Eastern Europe is clubbed under Olympic Group C and their qualification event will take place in 2023. 2 quotas are available for Group C.
1 quota to be given to highest ranked team at 2023 FEI Jumping Nation Cup Series

All 20 teams with get 3 individual quotas as well for individual event. Rest of the 15 individual quotas will be given as per FEI World Ranking. 14 quotas will be given as per highest ranked athletes per Olympic Group. 2 quotas per Olympic Group will be given based on ranking subject to 1 quota per nation.

1 quota will be given based on overall FEI Olympic rankings.

FEI Olympic ranking will be based on ranking points allocated between 1st January to 31st December 2023. Best 15 results per athlete/horse combination will be considered.


Indian Chances of Qualification: In all probability, chances of an Indian athletes qualifying for Equestrian will once again lie on Fouaad Mirza’s shoulders. But do watch out for Anush Agarwalla and Shruti Vora in Dressage discipline.
