Road to Paris 2024: Boxing

India has won a Bronze medal in Boxing in 3 of the last 4 Olympics – Vijender Singh (2008 Olympics), Mary Kom (2012 Olympics), Lovlina Borgohain (2020 Olympics). India even sent a record 9 boxers to Tokyo Olympics. Let us see how qualification system will work for Boxing at Paris 2024 Olympics.

Boxing at Paris 2024 Olympics

Boxing at Paris 2024 Olympics will take place in 13 weight categories – 7 weight categories in Men and 6 in Women. IBA has clubbed its normal weight categories to create 13 weight categories for Olympics.

Qualification System:

A boxer can qualify for Paris 2024 Olympics through 3 different routes:

  1. Continental Championships
  2. 1st World Qualification Tournament
  3. 2nd World Qualification Tournament

Here is how quotas will be allocated a different tournaments:

Q3 2023: Asian Games
Feb 29 – 12 Mar 2024: 1st World Qualification Tournament
May 23 – 9 Jun 2024: 2nd World Qualification Tournament

Current Status of Olympic Qualification:

Men: Out of 7 weight categories in Men’s Boxing, India is yet to secure an Olympic Quota. Hence, upcoming World Qualifiers become critical.

Women: Out of 6 weight categories in Women, India already has a quota in 4 weight categories. The only 2 weight categories where we still need a quota are 60 & 66 kg.

Current Quota Winners: Nikhat Zareen (50 kg), Preeti Pawar (54 kg), Parveen Hooda (57 kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg)
