
India will start off its FIH Pro League 2022 Campaign in both Men’s and Women’s format in coming days…here is a quick preview!
What is FIH Pro League?
The FIH Hockey Pro League is a annual global League involving hockey’s best national teams in the world, Men and Women. 9 teams take part in the Pro League. It was started in 2019 and replaced previously conducted FIH Hockey World League.
Format:
Each team plays 8 games home and 8 games away during a season. The competition takes place in the first half of the year. The team having accumulated the highest number of points at the end of the League is crowned Champion and receives the FIH Hockey Pro League Trophy.
Point System:
- 3 points to the winner in normal time
- One (1) point to the winner of a shootout following a draw plus one (1) bonus point, making a total of two (2) points
- One (1) point to the loser of the shootout, in the event of a draw
- No points to the loser of a match in normal time

Men’s – Australia (2019), Belgium (2021)
Women’s – Netherlands (2019, 2021)
India at FIH Pro League:
Hockey India withdrew its name from the inaugural Pro League in 2019 due to lack of clarity in the ranking points. Hence, FIH invited other teams in their place. However, in the 2019 season, Pakistan was removed from Pro League and India joined in their place from 2020 season in Men’s Pro League.
This season, Indian Women’s team will make its debut at the FIH Pro League. India and Spain replaced Australia and New Zealand. They withdrew due to COVID restrictions.
