India’s chance at an Olympic Quota in Sailing!

Recently, Bhavani Devi secured a historic Olympic quota in Fencing for India. It was first Olympic quota for India in the sport of Fencing. Soon enough, there can be more history created by Indian athletes. We are looking at a historic first quota for Indian Woman in the sport of Sailing.

Let us look at qualification chances for India.

Till now no Indian has qualified for Tokyo Olympics in the sport of Sailing. However, Indian sailors have got one final opportunity to book a place at 2021 Mussanah Open Championship. It is going to be the final Olympic qualification event for Asian and African sailors. The event is scheduled in Oman between 1st & 8th April.

Initially the Asian Qualification event was supposed to take place in Abu Dhabi in March but was moved to Oman due to rise in COVID.

One Olympic quota is going to be available in each of the events at Mussanah Open Championship. India’s best bet for an Olympic quota is going to be Nethra Kumanan. She became the first Indian woman to win a World Cup Series medal in Miami last year. She is going to take part in the Women’s Laser Radial event.

Here is India’s squad for Asian Olympic Qualifiers:

Men’s Event:

49er: Ganapathy/Varun, Prince/Manu, Sandip/Munna. This event has 10 Asian entries.

Laser standard: Vishnu Saravanan, Mohit Saini, Gitesh, Avinash, Ajay, Upamanyu, Ram Milan. This event has 20 Asian entries.

Windsurfing – RFX: Ebad Ali. This event has 8 Asian entries.

Women’s Event:

49er FX: Ekta Yadav and Rithika Dangi. This event has 7 entries.

Laser radial: Nethra Kumanan, Ramya Saravanan, Harshita Tomar, Jayalakshmi. This event has 13 Asian entries.

RS:X Female – Ishwarya Ganesh. This event has only 3 Asian entries. A great chance for Ishwarya to grab a quota.
