PBL 2020 Preview!

The 5th Season of Premier Badminton League is about to start from 20th January. The matches will be played in Chennai, Lucknow and Hyderabad. A total prize money of INR 6 crores is at stake this season. Here is a quick look at season 5 of PBL!

Teams for 2020 PBL: Pune 7 Aces, Chennai Superstarz, Awadhe Warriors, Bengaluru Raptors, Mumbai Rockets, Hyderabad Hunters, North Eastern Warriors

Tournament Format: Teams will play each other once. Every tie consists of 5 matches – 2 Men’s Singles, 1 Women’s Singles, 1 Men’s Doubles, 1 Mixed Doubles. Each match consists of 3 games and each game is of 15 points.

After round-robin ties, top 4 teams qualify for Semi-Final.

Points System:

  1. In a tie (Team A V Team B), each team will choose one match to be a Trump Match
  2. If the match picked by a team as the Trump Match is won, then it contributes +2 points to the match tie score.
  3. If the Trump Match is lost, then -1 point is deducted from that team’s overall match tie score
  4. 1 point for each Regular Match Won
  5. 0 points for Regular Matches Lost

2016: Delhi Dashers
2017: Chennai Smashers
2018: Hyderabad Hunters
2019: Bengaluru Raptors

Big players to watch out for: Sai Praneeth (Bengaluru Raptors), PV Sindhu (Hyderabad Hunters), Parupalli Kashyap (Mumbai Rockets), Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (Chennai Superstarz), Chirag Shetty (Pune 7 Aces), Tai Tzu Ying (Bengaluru Raptors), Tommy Sugiarto (Chennai Superstarz).

Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth are notable misses from this year’s PBL. Both have taken time out in an effort to qualify for Olympics.

Telecast: Matches will be telecast live on Star Sports and live streamed on Hotstar.
