Wrestling at the LA 2028 Olympics
Where will Wrestling take place?
Wrestling events will happen at the Los Angeles Convention Center (Hall 2) in downtown Los Angeles.

Dates for Competition:
24-30th July 2028
Events in Wrestling at the LA Olympics: There will be 18 medal events in Wrestling: 6 in Men’s Freestyle, 6 in Men’s Greco-Roman, and 6 in Women’s Wrestling.

Number of Quota Places:
A total of 288 athletes will compete in wrestling at the LA 2028 Olympics. A nation can qualify a maximum of 18 athletes (1 in each event).
How to Qualify:
In each weight category, 16 athletes will qualify.
Qualification quotas will be allocated through a 4-phase format:
Phase 1: 2027 World Championships – All countries that were part of their respective 2027 Continental Championships can send athletes for the 2027 World Championships. The 4 medalists ( Gold, Silver & 2 Bronze) from each of the 18 events will qualify for the LA Olympics.
Phase 2: World Rankings – The top 3 ranked athletes who are still not qualified will earn a quota in their respective weight category. The exact ranking cut-off date is yet to be announced, but it will sometime in early 2028. World rankings will be based on the following 7 events:
- 2027 Senior Continental Championships
- 2027 Ranking Series (3 events)
- 2027 Senior World Championships
- 2028 Ranking Series (1 event)
- 2028 Senior Continental Championships
Phase 3: 2028 Continental Qualification Tournament – Top 2 athletes in each of the 4 continental qualification tournaments will secure a slot for LA 2028 Olympics.
Phase 4: World Qualification Tournament – Countries that already obtained a quota place in the first phases, across all styles, will
not have the right to take part in this 4th qualification phase.
Only the nations that did not obtain a quota place during the first phases may participate in this 4th phase. 1 quota in each event is available at this qualification tournament.
Indian Athletes’ Chance of Qualification:
India has a good depth of wrestlers in Freestyle wrestling. 6 wrestlers qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Hopefully, more wrestlers qualify this time. Vinesh Phogat is also back on the mat and is dreaming of qualification for LA 2028.

India has won a total of 8 Olympic medals in Wrestling – 2 Silver and 6 Bronze.
