Wishing all our readers Happy New Year! Here are the sports events that will keep us glued to our screens in January! It is going to be an action packed started to 2024..
Cricket
Indian Men’s Cricket team will complete their South African Tour with the 2nd Test scheduled between 3-7 January. They will then play 3 T20s against Afghanistan in India (11, 14 and 17 January). Post this series, India will start their 5 Test Match series against England. 1st Test will take place in Hyderabad between 25-29 January.
On the Women’s Cricket front, Australia will complete their India tour with a 3 match T20 series (5 ,7 and 9 January)
Hockey
It is a huge month for Indian Hockey as Olympic qualification is on the line for Women’s team. India will be hosting Olympic Qualifier in Ranchi between 13-19 January. 8 teams in this qualifier will be vying for 3 qualification spots.
8 teams are divided into 2 pools -> Top 2 teams advance to Semis -> Olympic spot given to Semi-final winners & 3rd place play-off winner.
Pool A: Chile, Czech Republic, Germany, Japan
Pool B: India, Italy, New Zealand, USA
Indian fixtures:
13 Jan: India v USA
15 Jan: New Zealand v India
16 Jan: India v Italy
Semis on 18 Jan & play-off on 19 Jan
Badminton
The 2024 BWF World Tour kicks-off in Malaysia. It will be a massive month on the BWF World Tour. Lots of Olympic ranking points on offer.
Malaysia Open (BWF 1000): 9-14 January
India Open (BWF 750): 16-21 January
Indonesia Masters (BWF 500): 23-28 January
Table Tennis
The 2024 World Table Tennis tour kicks-off in Qatar. 3 big tournaments scheduled in January:
WTT Star Contender Doha: 8-13 January
WTT Contender Doha: 14-20 January
WTT Star Contender Goa: 23-28 January
Football
The 2023 AFC Asia Cup will be played in Qatar. 24 teams will compete in the tournament.
Format -> 6 pools of 4 teams each -> Top 2 teams from each group + 4 best placed 3rd teams qualify for Round of 16 -> QF -> Semis -> Final
India is in pool B with Australia, Syria & Uzbekistan. India’s pool matches:
13 Jan: Australia v India
18 Jan: India v Uzbekistan
23 Jan: India v Syria
Round of 16 to be played between 28-31 January.
Tennis
The 1st Grand Slam of the year will take place in Australia between 14-28 January. Indian Men’s Doubles players will be the one to watch out.
Fencing
Indian fencers will be action across the events. Here are the events scheduled in January:
Foil Paris World Cup: 11-13 Jan
Sabre Tunis Grand Prix: 12-14 Jan
Epee Grand Prix Du Qatar: 29-31 Jan
Shooting
2 Olympic qualifiers scheduled in January:
2024 Asian Shooting Championships (Rifle & Pistol): 5-18 January in Jakarta
2024 Asian Shotgun Championships: 12-23 January in Kuwait
Apart from this, there are is a World Cup scheduled as well:
24 Jan – 1 Feb: Cairo World Cup
Sailing
There are 2 World Championships scheduled in January. Both of these championships will act as Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifiers.
2024 ILCA 6 World Championships: 3-10 January in Argentina
2024 ILCA 7 World Championships: 24-31 January in Australia
Golf
3 events scheduled on the DP World Tour. Shubhankar Sharma is expected to take part.
Dubai Invitational: 11-14 Jan
Dubai Desert Classic: 18-21 Jan
Ras Al Khaimah Championship: 25-28 Jan
Handball
2024 Asian Men’s Handball Championship will take place in Bahrain between 11-25 January.
India is placed in pool C with Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Japan. India’s pool fixtures:
11 Jan: India v Iraq
13 Jan: Saudi Arabia v India
15 Jan: India v Japan
Top 2 teams from each group will go to next round.
