The Sportsgram India - Paris 2024: Prediction for Team India

Paris Olympics is 125 days away. The excitement is building with each passing day. And there are already many predictions going around in terms of who is going to win medals. So we are also hopping on the prediction bandwagon.

We will try and analyse the squad size of team India for Paris 2024. We look at current quotas and predict all quotas that Indian athletes can win across sports..

As on 23rd March 2024, Indian squad size for Paris 2024 is 58. Indian athletes have won quota places across 9 sports.

Let us have a look at all quotas that India athletes can realistically win in the months ahead.

Aquatics: In Aquatics events, India have a chance at quota in only swimming. Till now no Indian swimmer has breached Olympic qualification time in any event. We predict conservative 2 quotas in swimming through universality place. Prediction: 2 quotas in swimming

Archery: In Archery, we predict India will qualify for team events in both Men’s and Women’s recurve archery. Hence, a total of 6 athletes (3 Men & 3 Women) will represent India in Archery across 5 events. Prediction: 6 athletes in Archery

Athletics: India already has 9 quotas in Athletics. We have predicted quotas in athletics basis current rankings. Here is our prediction for athletics:

Women’s Events:
800m: KM Chanda
5000m: Ankita
100m Hurdles: Jyothi Yarraji
400m Hurdles: Vithya Ramraj
3000m Steeplechase: Parul Chaudhary (Qualified), Priti
Javelin Throw: Annu Rani
20km Race Walk: Priyanka (Qualified), Munita, Bhawna

Men’s Events
400m Hurdles: Santhosh Kumar
3000m Steeplechase: Avinash Sable (Qualified)
Long Jump: Murali Sreeshankar (Qualified), Jeswin Aldrin
Javelin Throw: Neeraj Chopra & Kishore Jena (Qualified), DP Manu
20km Race Walk: Akashdeep Singh, Suraj Panwar, Servin Sebastian, Arshpreet Singh, Vikash Singh, Paramjeet Singh Bisht (7 Indian athletes have qualified by achieving entry standard however only 3 can participate)

Relays: Indian Men’s 4x400m Relay Team: 4 athletes

Prediction: 24 athletes will qualify in Athletics

Badminton: The qualification scenario for Badminton is almost closed. We predict 7 athletes will represent India at Paris 2024. Men’s Singles: HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen; Women’s Singles: PV Sindhu; Men’s Doubles: Satwik/Chirag; Women’s Doubles: Ashwini/Tanisha. Prediction: 7 athletes

Boxing: India already has 4 quotas in Women’s Boxing. Indian boxers had a disastrous outing at first World Qualifier. They have one last opportunity to win quotas in second World Qualifier in May. Our prediction is we will win another 3 quotas at second qualifier. Anything more will be a bonus. Prediction: Total 7 boxers will qualify

Equestrian: Qualification for Equestrian is closed. India has 1 quota in Dressage event.

Fencing: As per current rankings, no Indian fencer is going to get a quota. However, they will have a chance to win quota at Asian qualifiers. Our prediction is 2 quotas: Bhavani Devi (Women’s Sabre), Taniksha Khatri (Women’s Epee)/Karan Singh (Men’s Sabre). Prediction: 2 Fencers will qualify

Hockey: Qualification is closed for Hockey. Men’s team of 16 members will represent India.

Golf: Qualification is based on ranking as on June. We predict 4 Golfers will represent India. Men: Subhankar Sharma, Gaganjeet Bhullar; Women: Aditi Ashok, Diksha Dagar. Prediction: 4 Golfers will qualify

Gymnastics: We predict one female athlete will qualify in Women’s vault. Either Pranati/Dipa will qualify. Prediction: 1 Gymnast will qualify

Judo: We predict one Indian Judoka will qualify for Paris 2024 through continental spot. Tulika Mann in Women’s 78+ kg is in qualification spot. Prediction: 1 Judoka will qualify

Rowing: No Indian athlete has qualified till now. 2 more chances are still there through Asian qualifier and World qualifier. We predict 3 rowers will qualify – Men’s Single Sculls, Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls. Prediction: 3 rowers will qualify

Sailing: India has 1 quota through Vishnu in ILCA 7 event. One final opportunity will come through World Qualifier in April. We should get at least 1 more Sailor qualified through that event. Prediction: 2 Sailors will qualify

Shooting: India already has 19 quotas in Shooting. One final World qualification tournament is scheduled in April. Hopefully, we should get at least 1 more quota. Prediction: 20 shooters will qualify

Table Tennis: Both Men’s & Women’s team qualified for team events. This means 6 athletes (3 Men & 3 Women) will represent India. The only open point is if we will have a Mixed Doubles pair. Qualifier for Mixed Doubles is scheduled for next month. Prediction: 6 athletes

Tennis: Rohan Bopanna will qualify for Men’s Doubles event. Who he chooses as his partner is yet to be decided. In Men’s Singles, Sumit Nagal has a good chance to qualify. Prediction: 3 players will qualify (1 Men’s Doubles pair, Sumit in Singles)

Weightlifting: In Weightlifting, Mirabai Chanu will be the only one to qualify. Prediction: 1 athlete

Wrestling: Till now only one Indian Wrestler (Antim Panghal – Women’s 53 kg) has secured a quota for India. 2 more opportunities to qualify ahead of us: Asian & World Qualifier. Given the turmoil Indian Wrestling has been in last one year, it is extremely hard to predict how many wrestlers will be able to qualify. We predict 4 Wrestlers to make the cut: Vinesh (Women’s 50 kg), Antim (Women’s 53 kg), Aman (Men’s 57 kg), Deepak (Men’s 87 kg). Really hoping more than 4 wrestlers qualify. Prediction: 4 wrestlers
