Basketball and 3×3 Basketball at the LA 2028 Olympics

Where will Basketball and 3×3 Basketball take place?

Basketball will be held at the new Intuit Dome in Inglewood, the home of the NBA’s LA Clippers. The 3×3 basketball competition will take place at a temporary outdoor venue within the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area in the San Fernando Valley.

Dates for Competition:

Basketball will be held between 12th and 30th July 2028.

3×3 Basketball will be held between 16th and 22nd July 2028.

Basketball

Number of Quota Places:

It will be a 12-team tournament for both Men and Women.

Basketball Qualification Process:

The 12 quotas in Men’s Basketball will be given based on the following pathways:

1. Host Country Quota: USA, as the host country, qualifies directly.
2. 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup: The best-ranked teams from each continent will qualify for the Olympics based on the following allocation.

3. FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament: The remaining 4 spots will be allocated through qualifiers. 24 teams will qualify for the Olympic Qualifiers based on performance in the FIFA World Cup and continental pre-qualifiers. These 24 teams will be divided into 4 groups. The winner of each group will qualify for the Olympics.

The 12 quotas in Women’s Basketball will be given based on the following pathways:

1. Host Country Quota: USA, as the host country, qualifies directly.
2. 2026 FIBA Basketball World Cup: The winner of the 2026 World Cup will directly qualify for the Olympics.
3. FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament: The remaining 10 spots will be allocated through qualifiers. 16 teams will qualify for the Olympic Qualifiers based on performance in the FIFA World Cup and the FIBA ranking. These 16 teams (including Host USA & 2026 World Cup Winner) will be divided into 4 groups. The top 3 teams from each group will qualify for the Olympics.

3×3 Basketball Qualification Process:

Number of Quota Places:

It will be a 12-team tournament for both Men and Women.

The qualification process will be the same for both men’s and women’s tournaments. The 12 quotas will be given based on the following:

1. World Ranking: The top-ranked team from different continents as of 1st December, 2027, will qualify for the Olympics. Allocation is as follows: Top team from Africa, Europe, and the Americas; Top 2 teams from Asia & Oceania combined.
2. 2028 FIBA Universality-driven Olympic Qualifier (OQT 1): The 2 highest placed teams at OQT 1 will qualify.
3. 2028 FIBA Olympic Qualifier (OQT 2): The 2 highest placed teams at OQT 2 will qualify.
4. 2028 Olympic Qualifier Series: The winner of the Olympic qualifier series will qualify for the Olympics.

Indian Chance of qualification:

No chance of qualification in Basketball. In 3×3 Basketball, an outside chance might be there through the universality tournament.
