Badminton at LA 2028 Olympics

Where will Badminton take place?

Badminton will be held at the Galen Center, a multi-purpose indoor arena at the University of Southern California (USC).

Dates for Competition:

15-24th July 2028

Medal Events: 21-24th July 2028

Events in Badminton at the LA Olympics:

5 events: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles

Number of Quota Places:

A total of 172 quotas will be allocated (86 Male and 86 Female).

A nation can have a maximum 16 quotas (8 Male and 8 Female).

How to Qualify:

Qualification will be based on BWF World Rankings. The ranking period will be between 3 May 2027 to 30 April 2028.

Singles Qualification: A maximum of 2 quotas will be allocated in both Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles, provided both athletes are ranked in the Top 16. If the player is outside top 16, 1 quota will be allocated to a nation basis a maximum of 38 entries.

Doubles Qualification: A maximum of 2 quotas will be allocated in each of Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles if the pairs are ranked in the Top 8. Otherwise, 1 quota per nation basis a maximum of 16 pairs per doubles event.

Universality Rule: In each of the event, at least one player/one pair needs to be from each of the 5 continental confederations.

Host Country Quota: 1 quota per gender is reserved for host nation.

Indian Players to watch out for during qualification:

Men’s Singles: There are currently 6 Indian players in Top-50 ranking (Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, Kiran George, Tharun Mannepali). These players should vie for quota places.

Women’s Singles: A lot of young players are coming up. A total o 6 players are in the top-50 world ranking currently (PV Sindhu, Unnati Hooda, Tanvi Sharma, Rakshitha Sree, Anupama, Isharani, Malvika).

Men’s Doubles: Satwik/Chirag are favourites to qualify and hopefully should be medal contenders.

Women’s Doubles: Tressa/Gayatri are one to watch on the Road to LA 2028.

Mixed Doubles: Dhruv/Tanisha and Rohan/Shivani are the 2 pairs to watch out.
